FAQs

Useful things to know when hiring a skip?

When filling your skip, start with any heavy bulky waste first, laying them flat and working up from the bottom of the skip, saving any small, loose rubbish for the end. Items like chairs and tables produce a lot of void space, consider safely breaking down these items and other waste such as cardboard boxes to maximise the space in your skip.

Make sure your skip is level loaded once complete; this means the waste doesn’t pass the skip walls. The driver allocated to collect your skip will decline to take it and need to return another day once you’ve “level loaded” the skip, this will incur a wasted journey charge.

Before hiring a skip consider where the skip should be placed and how the lorry will obtain access. Narrow roads leading to the property, gates and driveways could pose an issue if they’re small.

Skip lorries with a full skip load can often weigh approximately 15 tonnes, this can place a lot of strain on driveways, any damage caused due to this we will not be held responsible for.

Normal Skip Lorry Height: 3.4m Length: 6.82m Width: 2.97m

Where possible, we advise you to have your skip placed on private property, such as on a driveway. If this isn’t possible and you require the skip to be kept on the road/public space, you will need a Road Permit. If you feel a Road Permit is needed, please include this in your quotation and Recycle Fife Ltd will arrange this on your behalf through the local council. A charge will be included within your quotation to cover the Road Permit. Please be aware time frames for permit applications are around 7 days.

Unfortunately we do not offer exact ETA’s for our Skip Hire bookings, We do offer AM or PM timeslots Where possible, we will deliver at the earliest convenience or as requested at the point of ordering unless we call to advise otherwise

We will place your skip in the most convenient location which might be your driveway or the road. If we need to place the skip on the road you will need a permit and the correct signage and lights. Please contact us if you cannot place on private land (remember the grass verge outside your house may not be owned by you!) and we will organise a permit for you. Alternatively, we may be able to organise a wait and load facility.

So there are no issues at the time of delivery we would ask you to note:-

• Skips will not be placed on grassed areas where the vehicle has to drive across or place legs onto grass.

• Vehicles can only access any site over a drop kerb (not a raised kerb).

• Vehicles are not permitted to place legs onto council land and footpaths other than public highways.

• Placing skips on block paving, slabbed driveways, soft and un-level ground is not advisable and so is only done so at your own risk.

We cannot be held responsible for damage to customers’ property or premises if the ground or site is not suitable for a HGV. Similarly, we cannot accept any liability for damage caused to manholes not capable of carrying the weight of a HGV.

We offer a range of skip sizes from 2 cubic yards to 40 cubic yards. Have a look at our skips size guide on the home page to help you work out what size skip is the best for your needs.

We only accept Skips for collection that are level loaded, so please ensure you select a skip size that is sufficient for the waste you’re disposing of.

It is rare that additional charges are applied over and above the agreed standard rates unless there has been a breach of conditions. In which case the following may apply –

Permit Charges (non-refundable)

Waste journey charges + waiting time charges (Assessed on a case specific basis)

Additional tonnage

Incorrect waste types

Additional rental after 7 days
